The legislation regarding e-invoicing in Belgium has changed significantly in recent years. If you do business with the government, it is mandatory to send and receive e-invoices. Between Belgian companies, e-invoices will soon become mandatory as well.

E-invoicing for Belgian companies
From Jan. 1, 2026, it will be mandatory to send electronic or e-invoices to Belgian companies. However, companies should already be able to receive e-invoices.
Through which network?
The Peppol network is the standard. The e-invoice must be formatted in the Peppol BIS 3.0 format.
Other options, such as EDI, are also possible as long as the recipient and sender agree or if the invoice sent complies with the European standard: EN16931.
E-invoicing for the Belgian government
Since March 2024, it is mandatory for companies to send e-invoices to government agencies. A paper invoice or email with PDF is no longer valid.
Through which network?
To send invoices to the government, you must use the Peppol network. The e-invoice must be formatted in the Peppol BIS 3.0 format.
Currently, it is still possible to enter the data manually through the Mercury platform. The Mercury platform was created by the government to allow companies without a Peppol Access Point to send e-invoices.
How do I gain access to Peppol?
To send e-invoices, you must register through a certified Peppol Access Point such as Nymus. Both sole proprietors, and multinationals can use the Peppol network. The choice of a Peppol Access Point is not trivial and depends heavily on your business needs.
